The Next Trudeau Government and Foreign Policy: A Discussion with Senator Boehm
November 29, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST
The departure of Marc Garneau as Minister of Foreign Affairs and his replacement by Melanie Joly prompted headlines across the country. The new cabinet is also seen to have a left-of-centre perspective. Although much of foreign policy is directed by the Prime Minister’s Office, it is implemented by the department of Global Affairs, and its foreign policy, trade and development sections. There has been much speculation on what to expect of the new government in the realm of foreign policy.
There are few better-placed people to discuss this subject than Senator Peter Boehm. A former career foreign service officer, Senator Boehm was previously G7 and G8 “Sherpa,” Deputy Minister of Development, Associate Deputy Minister of Global Affairs and Ambassador to Germany. He also served in Washington, Cuba and various other assignments.
Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Senator Peter M. Boehm holds a Ph.D in History from the University of Edinburgh, a Master of Arts in International Affairs from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University, and a Bachelor of Arts in English and History from Wilfrid Laurier University. He was appointed to the Senate of Canada, representing the province of Ontario in October 2018. He is currently the Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade.
