Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. CIC Saskatoon Zoom: [TADP-02] Women & the Abolition of the Death Penalty

Join us for TADP-02, “Women & the Abolition of the Death Penalty ”, March’s contribution to the Zoom series “Towards the Abolition of the Death Penalty” (TADP).

Women are victims of the death penalty primarily as a result of male-dominated systems and practices. Although an overwhelming majority of the executed individuals are male, women’s experience of the death penalty is often oversimplified and must be examined through an intersectional prism, considering multiple, nuanced factors playing a role in their suffering. Women can also play an undeniable leading role in the abolition of the death penalty not least through, e.g., cultivating power dynamics in both private and public spheres defying violent state sanctions as a means of maintaining order in society.

“Towards the Abolition of the Death Penalty” is a panel discussion series on Zoom that aims to provide in-depth discussions on the death penalty from diverse legal, philosophical, sociological, psychological, and political perspectives. The speakers address and put in context current instances of the death penalty, exploring the dynamics involved in this criminal sanction. The series aims to create a dialogical platform for everyone interested in engaging with the abolitionist discourse to discuss the possibilities and challenges to put an end to the death penalty.

The series is offered in a joint partnership between the Paivand Society, the Canadian International Council (Saskatoon Branch), Amnesty International Canada, Carleton University’s Youth and Justice Lab, the Human Rights Research and Education Centre (University of Ottawa), and the Mardom Foundation, as a year-long monthly discussion beginning in February 2025 and concluding in December 2025.
