Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. Please consult our events calendar for a listing of CIC-organized and sponsored events.

CIC Montreal: Reflections on Canada’s Indo-Pacific Relations: Opportunities and Challenges for Canadians in the Region

June 5, 2025 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT

In September 2023, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Paul Thoppil as Canada’s first ever Indo-Pacific Trade Representative, based in Jakarta, Indonesia. This new position, an outcome of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy (launched in November 2022) is focused on deepening Canada’s trade and investment links in the Indo-Pacific region. Since arriving in the region, Mr. Thoppil has travelled extensively, often alongside Canadian companies and provincial representatives, meeting government and corporate leaders to boost Canadian exports and attract foreign investment.

Vina Nadjibulla, Vice-President Research and Strategy, Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada, will share some “Strategic Reflections” drawing from contributions from experts on the implementation of the Strategy and its impact, highlighting successes and priorities to ensure it remains effective in advancing Canadian interests in the region.

The incoming federal government’s pledge to review Canada’s foreign policy offers a timely opportunity to take stock of the Indo-Pacific Strategy as Canada looks to accelerate trade diversification and recalibrate and deepen relations with this important region.
