CIC Vancouver Island: Politics in the Club – Why Canada Should Invest in Arctic Science

January 27 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm EST

Vancouver Island Branch of the Canadian International Council (CIC) Presents

Politics in the Club’, a discussion on:

Why Canada Should Invest in Arctic Science”

CIC Vancouver Island is pleased to kick off 2024 with our first-ever ‘Politics in the Club’ event. The Politics in the Club Series will enable CIC Vancouver Island members to meet regularly to discuss foreign affairs and other policy issues in a comfortable setting. To start with, each meeting will be limited to just 24 branch members. The all-inclusive entrance fee of $25 will entitle participants to an (alcohol or non-alcohol) beverage, finger food, and a moderated discussion guided by a renowned expert on the topic under discussion.

For January 27, 2024, from 4 to 6 p.m., Peder Roberts will explore reasons “Why Canada Should Invest in Arctic Science.” Peder is an Associate Professor of Modern History at the University of Stavanger in Norway. He is particularly interested in the connections between science, politics, and environmental management in the Polar Regions from the twentieth century through to the present.

Peder’s books include The European Antarctic: Science and Strategy in Scandinavia and the British Empire, The Cambridge History of the Polar Regions (edited with Adrian Howkins), and The Surveillance Imperative: Geosciences in the Cold War and Beyond (edited with Simone Turchetti). Currently, he is completing a history of the Arctic Institute of North America and the changing dynamics of research in the Canadian and US north from around 1945 to 1976. The book’s working title is “The Dream of Orderly Development. “

Peder serves as the Co-Chief Officer of the Standing Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and is on the jury for the Canadian Historical Association’s book prize in northern Canadian history. Born in Australia, Peder studied and worked at universities in the USA, Sweden, France, and Britain before settling in Norway, though he has never lost his interest in cricket.
