CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Diaspora Jewish Divisions and the Question of Israel-Palestine with Dr. Mira Sucharov

A presentation by the CIC National Capital Branch’s Middle East Study Group.
Description: Dr. Mira Sucharov will trace the contours of the debate over Israel-Palestine in the Jewish Diaspora community. She will discuss the resonance of the term Diaspora, controversies over BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions), and how the next generation of Jews are negotiating among the questions of loyalty, exit and voice when it comes to Jewish community action around Israel.
Bio: Dr. Mira Sucharov is Associate Professor of Political Science at Carleton University. She specializes in psychological and identity approaches to international relations, Israeli-Palestinian relations and Diaspora Jewish politics. She is the author of The International Self: Psychoanalysis and the Search for Israeli-Palestinian Peace (SUNY Press, 2005), and articles on Israeli-Palestinian relations and Diaspora Jewish relations, emotions and international relations, pedagogy, and reflections on the profession. Dr. Sucharov is a three-time teaching award winner, and is also an award-winning columnist, whose pieces appear frequently in Haaretz, The Forward and the Canadian Jewish News. Her other pieces have also appeared in The Globe and Mail, Daily Beast, Huffington Post, NOW, +972 Magazine and The Walrus.
