Amidst rising geopolitical tensions in the Taiwan Strait driven by heightened activities from Beijing, neighboring countries and like-minded partners including Japan, South Korea, the United States, Canada, Australia, and the European Union, express their concerns regarding the maintenance of peace and security in the region.
Considering Taiwan’s position as Canada’s 13th largest trading partner worldwide and the 5th largest trading partner in Asia, the stability of the Taiwan Strait holds considerable importance for the well-being and interests of both Taiwanese and Canadians.
CIC Saskatoon is pleased to welcome Director General Lihsin (Angel) Liu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) from Vancouver for a discussion on Canada-Taiwan relations. Director General Liu will highlight how both sides can work together to solidify economic, cultural, and Indigenous relationships. Furthermore, the discussion will explore opportunities for greater collaboration in light of important policy-defining documents recently issued by the executive and legislative branches of Canada: Global Affairs Canada’s “IndoPacific Strategy” and the Canadian House of Commons’ “Canada and Taiwan: A Strong Relationship in Turbulent Times”.
About our speaker:
Ms. Liu assumed her post as Director General in October 2021. During her 23 years of foreign service for the Taiwan Foreign Ministry, she was posted twice in the United States, respectively in Houston, Texas from 2002-2008, and Los Angeles, California from 2012-2018.
