
CIC Yukon: Canada-Taiwan Relations Amid the Indo-Pacific Strategy

Today, Taiwan is Canada’s 13th largest trading partner and the 5th largest in Asia. And Taiwan’s Foreign Minister recently said that he was looking forward to expanding cooperation with Canada in key areas such as education, supply chains and technology. In addition, he added that the Taiwanese government welcomed Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy and called for Canadian support for Taiwan’s bid to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. To discuss Canada-Taiwan relations and the ballooning security situation in the Indo-Pacific region, CIC Yukon is delighted to welcome Angel Liu, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Vancouver.
Ms. Liu assumed her post as Director General in October 2021. During 23 years of foreign service for the Taiwan Foreign Ministry, she was posted twice in the United States, respectively in Houston, Texas from 2002-2008, and Los Angeles, California from 2012-2018. Prior to her current post, she held a variety of positions in the Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs, the Deputy Foreign Minister’s Office, the Mainland Affairs Council, the Department of North American Affairs, and lastly the Department of East Asian & Pacific Affairs. Ms. Liu has a master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University with a major in China Studies and international economics.
