CIC Winnipeg: The U.S. Withdrawal from Afghanistan: Implications for Canadian Foreign Policy

October 7, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm CDT

After nearly twenty years of war, President Joe Biden announced the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan on April 13, 2021, with the final evacuation symbolically scheduled for September 11.  A rapid Taliban resurgence in the weeks before the American evacuation in August plunged the country into chaos. As the consequences of the American evacuation and Taliban resurgence continue to unfold, Canada is faced with an increasing number of foreign policy decisions in the region. The immediate aftermath begs the question of how to address an influx of refugees and asylum seekers, as well as whether to recognize the Taliban government. However, there are also important long-term considerations, such as the effectiveness of military interventions and the manner in which Canada has tied itself to American interests. Our speakers will explore the implications for Canadian foreign policy in Afghanistan.
