CIC Winnipeg: Politics in the Pub: The Politics of International Sports

January 16, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm CST

Description

Sports has long served as a proxy for military conflict between states. As in military conflict, countries will go to great lengths to ensure success on the playing field, the water and the slope, and in the arena, the stadium and the pool. In the quest for fame, riches and international prestige, athletes and countries have always tested the limits of sportsmanship. As the World’s best athletes prepare for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in South Korea, the quest for sporting success is overshadowed by the spectre of Russia’s state-sponsored doping scandal.

Speaker’s Biography

Jeff Powell is an Olympian and World Champion born and raised in Winnipeg. Through his journey as a provincial, national and world champion and national team coach, Jeff has experienced first-hand much of what competitive sport has to offer. As such, he is committed to promoting the cause of high performance athletes and the systems that support them. Jeff holds a BA and a Master’s degree in Economics. Jeff was inducted to the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame on November 7, 2015, in recognition of an exceptional athletic career.
