CIC Victoria: Who Won, Who Lost and what now for the future of American politics?

November 22, 2022 @ 11:30 am - 2:00 pm PST

Union Club in-person lunch

Once the ‘midterms dust’ has finally settled, it will be time to take stock of the American political scene with a keen eye on 2024, and if, for example, former President Donald Trump could actually make a comeback.  And what will the election results portend for U.S. policymaking over the next two years, and for the 2024 presidential race? In addition, what could be the most pressing challenges for US democracy in the years ahead, and how novel are recent retrenchments symptomatic of democratic backsliding in America?

Join us for what will be a very insightful look at the midterms results with Dr. Rebecca Thorpe, political science professor at the University of Washington (Seattle) where she is currently teaching a variety of courses including American National Institutions.  Her work has received national recognition, including the American Political Science Association’s Richard Neustadt Award for best book on executive politics in 2015, and the D. B. Hardeman Award presented by the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation for the best book on the US Congress in 2016.  Her recent articles and panel events have included, for example, ‘US Empire in the Age of Trump’ and ‘The Biden Agenda: Promises and Prospects,’ respectively.   Please note that due to the speakers availability our UC lunch is on Tuesday this month.
