CIC Victoria: Asia-Pacific Update
November 22, 2017 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm PST
There is more than the usual sense of expectancy in the air in Asia these days. In China, General Secretary Xi Jinping is poised to embark on a programme of economic reform that should avoid the middle-income trap looming on the horizon. Failure to do so will have worldwide ramifications. Meanwhile, the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal that would have helped consolidate American leadership in the Asia-Pacific region is in tatters. And what about Pyongyang’s end game? Will Japan and South Korea “go nuclear” in response to North Korea’s provocations? Will someone miscalculate disastrously, or will Asia’s longest-running Cold War soap opera finally splutter to a close?
