CIC Victoria: The Israel-Hamas War: History and Context

June 20 @ 9:44 pm EDT

On the morning of Saturday, October 7, Hamas fired a barrage of rockets into southern Israel. This was followed by an unprecedented multi pronged invasion through land, air and sea that resulted in the death of 1,200 people in Israel and 5,600 wounded. In addition, Hamas terrorists took hostage about 240 people.

Israel responded by attacking Hamas and entering the Gaza Strip. After some 40 days of fighting, a good deal of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed and at least 11,500 Palestinians have been killed and almost 30,000 wounded. While there have been many calls for a ceasefire, the fighting continues.

Given the situation in Gaza, CIC Victoria, the Middle East Discussion Group at the Centre for Global Studies and the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society at the University of Victoria (UVic) have come together to co-sponsor an online public event with UVic History, Political and Religious Studies experts who will discuss the historical underpinnings of the war and its geopolitical context. The event will be moderated by Chris Kilford, CIC Victoria’s branch president.

This online event will be held on Wednesday, November 22 from 2:30-4 pm PT.
