CIC Victoria: The Importance of Security and Intelligence in Canada Today

Mr. Fadden will present his views on “the importance of security and intelligence issues in Canadian life today”. The lecture is scheduled at 5:00 pm for 5:30 pm. For those CIC members who wish to continue in a smaller discussion with Mr. Fadden, there will be a seated dinner – first come, first served to a maximum of 22 people – immediately following the lecture at 7:00 pm.
Richard (Dick) Fadden retired this year after almost forty years in the federal public service, most recently serving as National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister. After beginning his career as a diplomat, including an assignment in Accra, Ghana, Mr. Fadden moved to the Privy Council Office in 1983 to work in the Security and Intelligence Secretariat. After a long stint with the Auditor General’s Office where he served as legal advisor and Assistant Auditor General, he returned to the Privy Council as Deputy Clerk, Counsel and Security & Intelligence Co-ordinator and was in that role on 11 September 2001. He was first appointed as Deputy Minister in the Canadian Food Inspection Services Agency from 2002-05; as Deputy Minister of Citizenship and Immigration from 2006-09; and as Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service from 2009-13. This was followed by his appointment as Deputy Minister of National Defence from 2013-15 befo re his final role as National Security Adviser.
Dick Fadden holds a BA in Political Science from McGill and a law degree from Université de Montréal. He and his wife Patricia Smith have a daughter and a son.
