Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. Please consult our events calendar for a listing of CIC-organized and sponsored events.

If you have an idea for a CIC event, please contact us at info@thecic.org.

CIC Victoria: The Asia-Pacific on the move – challenges and opportunities

November 13, 2024 @ 11:30 am - 5:00 pm PST

When: Wednesday, 13 November
Where: The Union Club, 805 Gordon Street
Time: 11:30 am – 1:30 pm (registration desk opens at 11:30 am)
Our Speaker: Dr. David Malone, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations

Fresh from a visit to India (and as Canada and India engaged in their most recent diplomatic spat) plus a stop in Japan, we are delighted to announce that Dr. David Malone, retired Rector of the United Nations (UN) University Tokyo (2013-2023) and former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, will be speaking about the Asia-Pacific at our next Union Club lunch. As David will discuss, the Asia-Pacific is rapidly becoming the global centre of economic dynamism and will play a critical role in shaping Canada’s future over the next half-century.

Encompassing 40 economies, over four billion people and nearly $50 trillion in economic activity, it is the world’s fastest-growing region and home to six of Canada’s top 13 trading partners. On the other hand, great power competition and inter-state tensions are on the rise. And the region is home to four states – China, India, North Korea and Pakistan- that possess nuclear weapons.

Our speaker is the retired Rector of the UN University Tokyo (2013-2023). Prior to joining the UN University, Dr. Malone served (2008–2013) as President of Canada’s International Development Research Centre, a funding agency supporting policy-relevant research in the developing world. Dr. Malone had earlier served as Canada’s Representative to the UN Economic and Social Council and as Ambassador to the UN (1992–1994); as Director General of the Policy, International Organizations and Global Issues Bureaus within Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (1994–1998); and as President of the International Peace Academy (now International Peace Institute), a New York-based independent research and policy development institution (1998–2004). He also oversaw Canada’s economic and multilateral diplomacy within DFAIT (2004–2006) and served as Canada’s High Commissioner to India and non-resident Ambassador to Bhutan and Nepal (2006–2008).

Dr. Malone has held research posts in the Economic Studies Program, Brookings Institution; Massey College, University of Toronto; and the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. He was an Adjunct Professor at Carleton University and has also been a Guest Scholar and Adjunct Professor at Columbia University. He holds a degree from l’École des Hautes Études Commerciales (Montreal), an MPA from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, and a DPhil in International Relations from Oxford University. He has also studied at the American University of Cairo. Dr. Malone has published extensively, in both academic and lighter veins.
