January 18, 2017 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm EST

On October 13 of 2016, King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away after a reign of 70 years and 126 days. Revered by the Thai people, his passing will have a profound effect on a country that has gone through many military coups and in recent years has seen a growing confrontation between urban elites and populist voters largely based in rural areas. The country, now in a period of a year’s mourning, is currently ruled by a military junta. Canada’s most recent ambassador the Kingdom of Thailand, Phil Calvert, who left Bangkok in the summer of 2016, will outline the background of what is happening in Thailand and provide an analysis of the factors that will govern Thailand’s political evolution after the death of the King.

Speaker’s Biography
Dr. Phil Calvert was most recently, the Canadian Ambassador to Thailand, Cambodia and Lao PDR. He currently is a Senior Fellow, China Institute, U of Alberta. He served 10 years in China. He served as Deputy Head of Mission in the Canadian Embassy in Beijing (2004-2008). From 2008-2012, as Director General in Ottawa, he managed Canada’s overall trade and political relations with North Asia (China, Japan, Korean peninsula, Hong Kong, Mongolia and Taiwan).
