Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. Please consult our events calendar for a listing of CIC-organized and sponsored events.

If you have an idea for a CIC event, please contact us at info@thecic.org.

CIC Victoria: Sudan – A genocide revisited

December 9, 2025 @ 5:00 pm PST

When: Tuesday, 9 December 2025
Where: The Sticky Wicket Pub, Wicket Hall, the Strathcona Hotel, 919 Douglas Street
For: This is a CIC member only event
Time: 5 – 7:00 pm (doors open at 5 pm)
Our Speaker: Nick Coghlan

Our focus:

Nick Coghlan will bring us up to date on the thirty-month long war in Sudan, where a new wave of ethnically motivated killings has marked the return of a genocide that never really went away. Nick will look at the principal obstacles to peace and also at how Canada’s failure to live up to its arms export control obligations is contributing materially to war crimes.

Our speaker:

Nicholas Coghlan served as Canada’s first resident diplomat in Khartoum, Sudan from 2000–2003. His experiences over that period are recounted in Far in the Waste Sudan (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2005). He was also the first resident Canadian ambassador in Juba, the capital of the newly independent South Sudan. Nick, and his wife, Jenny, were awarded the Meritorious Service Cross for their role in the evacuation of Canadian citizens from Juba when civil war broke out in late 2013. His most recent book is Collapse of a Country: A Diplomat’s Memoir of South Sudan (McGill-Queen’s, 2017). Today, he is a highly sought after commentator on the war in Sudan and the author of numerous articles including: Sudan’s Civil War: no end in sight – Open Canada
