CIC Victoria: Six Continents over Five Decades: An Intrepid Woman’s Memoir

March 8 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm PST

When: Friday, 8 March
Where: Tapestry at Victoria Harbour, downtown at 777 Belleville Street
Time: 2:30 – 4:00 pm (doors open at 2:15 pm)
Our Speaker: Karen Christie

On International Women’s Day, join Tapestry at Victoria Harbour and the Canadian International Council Victoria Branch as we welcome intrepid adventurer Karen Christie, whose innate curiosity has taken her to 6 continents, involving at least 32 moves.

Karen began her life-long journey as a teacher in various remote corners of the world, and ended her career as a diplomat representing Canada in many challenging locations. As a teacher, civil society representative and diplomat, her assignments included famine-ridden Ethiopia, post-conflict Bosnia, war-torn Afghanistan, and Haiti after its horrific 2010 earthquake. For the latter two countries, Karen was part of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), which is now part of Global Affairs Canada. Her sectors of focus were education in Afghanistan and governance in Haiti.

Along the way, and for her outstanding service, she was awarded the United Nations Peacekeeping Medal for 6 months spent in Kosovo, Canada’s General Services Medal for 12 months in Kandahar, Afghanistan and Canada’s Operational Services Medal for another 16 months in Kabul, Afghanistan.

At this event Karen will also have copies of her memoir on sale for $25 (cash or e-transfer). Please click here for more information about her book.
