Speaker’s Biography
Jonathan Manthorpe has worked for 40 years as a foreign correspondent and international affairs commentator for Canadian newspapers. He has been based in Europe, Africa and Asia. At the moment, he writes weekly columns for Ottawa-based iPolitics, and Vancouver-based Facts and Opinions. He also writes regular sections on Asia-Pacific for the Business in Vancouver newspaper. Manthorpe has also been involved in special projects for governments and international organizations, including work for the United Nations, the World Bank, the Asia Development Bank, the Canadian International Development Agency and various NGOs.
Dr. Andrew Wender is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Departments of History and Political Science, and Religious Studies Program at the University of Victoria. He holds an Interdisciplinary PhD from UVIC, which he completed while a Fellow at UVIC’s Centre for Studies in Religion and Society. His doctoral studies investigated how modern secular laws’ tendency to transform all of reality into property in fact manifests the law’s powerful religious foundation. He previously earned degrees in History from Western Washington University, as well as a J.D. from the Seattle University School of Law. Dr. Wender’s teaching and writing focuses on the history and politics of the Middle East; the historical interconnections among politics and religion; world history and politics; and political theory. He has been widely published in such journals as Digest of Middle East Studies, Implicit Religion, and Capitalism, Nature, Socialism; as well as serving as a speaker and media commentator on Middle East affairs and related global issues.
