CIC Victoria: Politics in the Pub: Defying the Populists – Canada’s Leadership in the Venezuela Crisis
May 20, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm PDT
$20
Recently, we have heard a lot about the crisis in Venezuela and during his talk, Ben will discuss how Canada became a leading voice in efforts to support the Venezuelan people and what’s happening on the ground right now. Ben will also argue that Canada, and the CIC, have a vital role to play in defying the populists of the world, standing up for the rules-based international order and actively contributing to the development of Canada’s future foreign policy.
Speaker’s Biography
Ben Rowswell has seen a great deal of action during his twenty-five year-long foreign affairs career – a career he resigned from in late 2018 in order to take over at the helm of CIC. Ben first served with the UN in Somalia, then later in Iraq during the first two years after Saddam Hussein fell, where he was Canada’s first diplomatic envoy to Baghdad. Five years later, he was in Afghanistan helping to lead the Canadian government’s efforts to rebuild that country. More recently he served as the senior political officer in Canada’s Embassy to Egypt and from 2014-2017 as our Ambassador to Venezuela.
Event is open to CIC members and one guest.
