CIC Victoria: Politics in the Pub: Brexit and Europe: What to expect next and what are the consequences for both sides?
March 25, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT$20
Registration for CIC members will commence two weeks prior to the event.
With only days to go to Brexit, we have all been witness to the interminable ongoing wrangling between Britain and the EU. What will be the consequences going forward and what will it mean for Canada? Our expert speakers will be CIC Victoria Branch VP Marc Lortie and UVic professor of political science Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly. Because of the past popularity of our Brexit events, CIC members have the choice of either attending the talk on the Monday or Tuesday evening.
Marc Lortie joined the Department of External Affairs in 1971. In 1989, he served in Paris as Minister-Counsellor for Political Affairs and as Personal Representative of the Prime Minister for La Francophonie. He then served as the Canadian Ambassador to Chile from 1993 to 1997 followed by appointments at Harvard University, Sherpa for the Third Summit of the Americas and Assistant Deputy Minister for the Americas. Marc became Canada’s Ambassador to Spain from 2004 until 2007 and from 2007 to 2012 served as Canada’s Ambassador to France.
Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly is a political scientist, specializing in comparative and urban politics. He worked in the French public sector for 10 years, in the French Small Business Administration and the Nord Pas-de-Calais Regional Council. Prior to his 2001 appointment at UVic, Emmanuel was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Western Ontario (1999-2000), and Assistant Director of the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame (2000-01). At UVic’s School of Public Administration he is Jean Monnet Chair in European Urban and Border Region Policy, Director of the European Studies minor and of the European Union Centre for Excellence
