CIC Victoria: North Korea: The Nuclear Question and Beyond

May 18, 2018 @ 10:30 am - 1:00 pm PDT

Description

For many, North Korea is simply a rogue state with nuclear weapons led by a man President Trump has referred to as “little rocket man.” But there is far more to North Korea than rockets. In his not to be missed talk, Dr. Stephan Haggard, who often serves as the world’s go-to source for making sense of economic, political and security developments on the Korean Peninsula, will explore how the international community might convince Pyongyang to finally come in from the cold.

Speaker’s Biography

Dr. Stephan Haggard is the Lawrence and Sallye Krause Professor of Korea-Pacific Studies, director of the Korea-Pacific Program, and distinguished professor of political science at the School of Global Policy & Strategy at the University of California, San Diego. He has written extensively on the political economy of North Korea with Marcus Noland, including Famine in North Korea: Markets, Aid, and Reform (2007), Witness to Transformation: Refugee Insights into North Korea (2011) and most recently, Hard Target: Sanctions, Inducements, and the Case of North Korea (2017). He co-authors the “North Korea: Witness to Transformation” blog at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He is also the current editor of the Journal of East Asian Studies and a member of the US Council on Foreign Relations.
