Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. Please consult our events calendar for a listing of CIC-organized and sponsored events.

If you have an idea for a CIC event, please contact us at info@thecic.org.

CIC Victoria: Mobilizing Canada for Leadership Abroad

August 24 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm PDT

Please join us at the Victoria Forum!

CIC Victoria will be at the Victoria Forum on Monday, 24 August with a panel focused on mobilizing Canada for leadership abroad.

The topic

As global power disperses and the familiar architecture of the world gives way to a new, uncharted era, a powerful truth is emerging: the future will not be written by superpowers alone. It will be shaped by the imagination and ambition of nations that dare to see beyond their size — and Canada is poised to be one of them. Our ability to rise to this moment, to spark new forms of cooperation, and to help design a more connected and compassionate world will depend on the strength we cultivate at home: resilient democratic institutions, a diplomatic and development presence that reaches with purpose, defence capabilities ready for a shifting landscape, an economy built for long‑term stability, and citizens who believe in the promise of collective action.

Our panel

Our panel will explore what Canada must build at home to lead with integrity, empathy, and inclusion — and how we can step onto the global stage not just as participants, but as architects of a more just and interconnected future.

Our CIC panel includes:

  • MC – Dr. Reeta Tremblay – introductory comments and a focus on democratic institutions
  • Former Ambassador Phil Calvert – a focus on diplomacy
  • Ms. Rebecca Mellet – a focus on development
  • Major-General (ret’d) Mike St. Louis – a focus on defence
  • Dr. Pedro Marquez – a focus on economics

Our panel will take place at Royal Roads University, in the Sherman Jen Building (main campus near Hatley Castle), beginning at 3:10 pm.  Please arrive at 3:00 pm.

Those registering for the entire conference are welcome to join us of course.  For CIC Victoria members who are just coming for our panel, registration information will be sent by email.
