CIC Victoria: Latin America – Crises and Contradictions
March 15 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm EDT
Democracy in Latin America has always been a work-in-progress and from Brazil, to Peru and Venezuela, just to name a few Latin American countries, the erosion of democracy has taken many forms, from assaults on the core electoral components of democracy to the denial of fundamental rights and freedoms. In this talk, Professor Max Cameron, from the University of British Columbia and one of Canada’s foremost experts on Latin America will discuss why we are witnessing strong, sometimes anti-democratic, right-wing backlashes that threaten the core institutions of democracy in Latin America and what the future might hold
Our speaker specializes in Latin America politics and is the author or editor of a dozen academic books as well as over sixty peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. In 2020, he was named a Distinguished Fellow by the Canadian Association of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and in 2022 was the recipient of the Guillermo O’Donnell Democracy Award and Lectureship by the Latin American Studies Association for his work on democracy in Latin America.
Doors will open at 11:30 am. The cost to attend is $40 for CIC members, $45 for non-members, $30 for CIC young professional members and non-member students and $20 for CIC student members.
