CIC Victoria: In conversation with Open Canada Editor Kareem Shaheen
March 15 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am PDT
Kareem Shaheen is the new Editor of Open Canada. Before joining the organization, he worked in the Middle East, first as a local reporter in Abu Dhabi and Beirut, then as a Middle East correspondent for the Guardian, reporting on the war in Syria, including chemical attacks, the refugee crisis, and also the 2016 attempted coup and various election campaigns in Turkey. He also covered the Islamic State, and events in Yemen and Iraq.
After moving to Canada three years ago, Kareem focused on working with independent media organizations covering the Middle East and he became the Middle East and newsletters editor at New Lines Magazine, a publication focused on longform journalism from the region.
During this event, Kareem, an Egyptian citizen, and moderator Chris Kilford, will discuss Kareem’s past reporting from the Middle East, his arrival and settling down in Canada three years ago, and his future plans for Open Canada. There will also be ample time for an audience Q & A.
