CIC Victoria: From Burma to Myanmar: The Slippery Road to Democracy
March 21, 2018 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm PDT

Description
Myanmar’s transition from 55 years of dictatorship to hope, freedom and democracy, recently came into the international “humanitarian” spotlight when the Rohingya crisis abruptly reminded us that the country remains deeply fragile and conflicted. Since its independence, Myanmar has experienced violent and chronic ethnic strife and a long civil war which it chose to deal with by enclosing itself inside an autarchic cocoon of oppression and fear. Is Myanmar’s slip on the road to effective self-governance an isolated event or deeply symptomatic of a country struggling with the challenges of nation-building in a globalized world into which it has been catapulted? During her talk, Fainula will share her analysis of Myanmar’s current challenges in the context of its history, its geopolitical position and the long path of reconstruction, peace and development after a protracted period of civil conflict.
