CIC Victoria: Exporting Virtue? China’s International Human Rights Activism in the Age of Xi.

April 20, 2022 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm EDT

Join us at the Union Club for an in-person event with Dr. Pitman B. Potter.

With the ever-expanding Belt and Road Initiative it’s clear that China’s global footprint continues to expand and evolve in often unpredictable ways. Indeed, as China’s global influence in the world has grown, so has its efforts to export its authoritarian human rights model to the world, operating alongside and reinforcing the spread of authoritarianism. And when challenged, China continues to use its permanent seat on the UN Security Council to block important discussions about human rights issues. During his talk, Professor Potter, one of Canada’s leading experts on China, will discuss the ways in which Xi Jinping’s China has been attempting to undermine and ultimately revise international human rights standards to accommodate its interests, and how Canada, and like-minded states can respond to this new challenge.
