Our first lunch event of 2024 features Richard Fadden. Richard will explore the pressing security challenges facing Canada while offering expert insights into the intricate web of foreign, defence, and security policies that are shaping Canada’s position on the world stage. Indeed, as he will discuss, national security – the safety of our citizens – is the first responsibility of governments, the priority before all others. During his talk, Richard will focus on key issues such as the ongoing war in Ukraine and the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza and their reverberations on the world stage and in Canada. Richard will also address the potential impacts of foreign interference in Canada, examining the role of countries such as India and China. This event presents a rare opportunity to engage with one of Canada’s foremost security experts.

Richard Fadden has provided steady-handed leadership throughout his distinguished career as a public servant. He was the National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of Canada (2015-2016). Previously, he was Deputy Minister of National Defence (2013-2015) and served as Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (2009-2013). He also served as Deputy Minister for Citizenship and Immigration Canada (2006-2009) and Natural Resources Canada (2005-2006). He was President of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (2002-2005) and Deputy Clerk and Counsel in the Privy Council Office (2000-2002), during which he assumed the additional duties of Security and Intelligence Coordinator in 2001 where he helped shape Canada’s response to 9/11.
