Headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with crimes of gravest concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. Through the operation of international criminal justice, the ICC aims to hold those responsible accountable for their crimes and to help prevent these crimes from happening again. Governed by an international treaty called the Rome Statute, the ICC is the world’s first permanent international criminal court with a staff of 900 from some 100 countries. Canada was one of the states that helped bring the ICC into existence more than 20 years ago. At this event, our speaker will provide an insider’s look at the history, role and structure of the ICC, examine recent successes and also the current challenges facing the court.
Our speaker:
Jamie Hammond was the senior military analyst and co-lead/founder of the Information Fusion Centre in the Office of the Prosecutor at the ICC in 2023-2024. Prior to that post, Jamie held roles as an Assistant Deputy Minister in the BC Government (responsible for international strategy, competitiveness, trade policy and venture capital programs), Private Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of BC, and a Colonel in Canada’s infantry and special forces, serving across Canada, in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Germany, Brunei, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States. He currently teaches international trade at Royal Roads University.
