Featuring Prof Jack Lohman, CEO of The Royal BC Museum

Attacks on history, art and cultural identity remain an urgent issue across the world and not just at the front lines of Syria or Yemen. The rising complexity of these issues calls for solutions that go beyond traditional diplomacy to include engagement by international museum leaders. RBCM CEO Jack Lohman has worked with museums in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America. In post-conflict areas including South Africa, Kosovo and Rwanda, and in countries like Poland emerging from a legacy of communism, his work was part of the recovery process, strengthening respect for human rights and cultural identity. Now in Canada, he is connecting the dots between peace operations, humanitarian aid and cultural salvage, working with UNESCO to position Canada as a ‘safe haven’ for museum objects caught up in war or emerging from natural disasters.

Speaker’s Biography
Prior to joining the RBCM in 2012, Prof. Lohman was Director of the Museum of London for 10 years. From 1999-2002, as CEO of the Iziko Museums, consisting of 15 South African museums, he led the creation of a post-apartheid national museum sector. He is an advisor to the Institute for National Museums of Rwanda and serves as editor-in-chief of UNESCO’s publication series Museums and Diversity. As Chairman of the National Museum in Warsaw following the collapse of communism, he led the museum’s post-communist transformation. From 2002-08, he was Chairman of the International Council of Museums UK; from 2002-10, he was a member of the UK National Commission for UNESCO Culture Committee.
