CIC Victoria: Canada’s new Indo-Pacific strategy

January 10 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm PST

When:Tuesday, 10 January from 5 – 7 pm

Where: Politics-in-the-Pub at the Sticky Wicket

What: Canada’s new Indo-Pacific strategy.  The Indo-Pacific region has and will continue to play a critical role in shaping Canada’s future. Encompassing 40 economies, over four billion people and $47.19 trillion in economic activity each year, it is the world’s fastest growing-region and home to six of Canada’s top 13 trading partners. Simply put: the rise of the Indo-Pacific will create extraordinary opportunities for Canada, increasing our prosperity and driving economic growth.  On the other hand, the Indo-Pacific is home to four states that possess nuclear weapons (China, India, North Korea and Pakistan) and faces many challenges while China’s rise as a global actor is reshaping the strategic outlook of every state in the region.  To get a better understanding of Canada’s new Indo-Pacific strategy, we are delighted to announce that Dr. Victor V. Ramraj, from the Centre for Asia Pacific Initiatives (CAPI) at the University of Victoria (UVic), will join us at our next PiP to discuss the importance of the strategy and zero-in on its key highlights.  Victor was an advisor to the co-chairs of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Advisory Committee that did much of the work behind the new strategy.  Victor joined UVic as a Professor of Law and CAPI Chair in Asia-Pacific Legal Relations in 2014, after sixteen years at the National University of Singapore, where he twice served as the Faculty’s Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs.  In addition, Victor holds degrees from McGill University, the University of Toronto, and Queen’s University Belfast, and he has edited/co-edited several books and his work has been published in leading journals around the world.
