With Donald Trump seemingly cruising to the Republican nomination in the US, attention is shifting to the November rematch with Joe Biden. But there’s another big election in North America this year that deserves our attention. On June 2, voters in Mexico will pick a new president, all 500 members of the Chamber of Deputies, all 128 members of the Senate, as well as leaders in nine states, representatives to state legislatures and officials for more than 1,500 municipalities. In addition, incumbent president Andrés Manuel López Obrador is impeded from running again as the Mexican Constitution forbids presidential re-election.

Against the back-drop of the Mexican elections, Canadian trade and investment with Mexico is steadily growing and Mexico is Canada’s third largest trading partner after the US and China. In addition, Mexico recently surpassed China to become Washington’s main trading partner.  However, within Mexico there are domestic issues such as increasing migration towards the US border to organized crime that continue to challenge government authority.  To discuss the Canada-Mexico bi-lateral relationship, the domestic challenges that will face the new Mexican president and how Mexico will handle its relations with Washington post-2024, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Pedro Márquez.

Born in Campeche, Mexico, Dr. Pedro Márquez obtained his undergraduate degree in Commerce at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de Mexico and both a Master’s degree in Political Science and Doctorate degree in Business and Political Science at the University of Calgary.  He then returned to Mexico as dean and department head at the Tecnológico de Monterrey business school in Mexico City.  In 2007, he joined Royal Roads University (RRU) as dean of the Faculty of Management and was appointed Vice-President, Research and International at RRU from 2015-2023.  At present he is Professor of Strategic Management and International Business at its Business School.  Dr. Márquez has co-authored book chapters and journal articles on North American free trade and his research is focused on corporate accountability, Latin American politics and business, and Mexico’s business environment.
