CIC Vancouver: Running Water, or Running Out?
May 12, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm EDT
The CIC Vancouver invites you to join us on Thursday, May 12th, 2016 5-7pm, at the Vancouver Public Library, 7th Floor Boardroom, for an evening discussion with Margaret Catley-Carlson entitled “Running Water, Or Running Out?”.
Is the world indeed running out of water? If the answer is YES in some places, and NO in others and NO in the aggregate, what can we do about this? Are economic and political systems, to say nothing of social organizations, evolving toward getting out of trouble, and toward freely running water?
It’s often assumed that Canada must have a great role to play in this process because we have ‘so much’ water. This needs some examination, both from the standpoint of how much we have, and whether we are in a position to be a knowledge exporter in this area. It’s not at all easy to arrange for more optimal management of water systems and this itself leads to food shortage, migration and flood damage threats, given the rapid changes in water flows, availability, water events and the other changes already clearly visible.
Margaret Catley-Carlson operates within Boards of Organizations focused on improved water resource management and agricultural productivity and rural development, serving with 20+ in the last decades. Now PAC Chair of the International Commission on Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Vice Chair Canadian Water Network Board, member Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Development, International Fertilizer Development Council, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), and Thinker in Residence for Belgian Academy of Sciences. Is a Patron/ past Chair Global Water Partnership, member of the Council of Advisors of the World Food Prize, Library of Alexandria in Egypt, and the Robert Daughterly Institute on Water for Food production? Jurist of the Tyler and Stockholm Water Prizes.

Ms. Catley-Carlson has ten honorary degrees and is an Officer of the Order of Canada.
