CIC Vancouver: ‘Little Ghandi’ Film Screening
November 23, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm EST

Global Affairs is working on outreach and engagement of Canadians on Syria. As such, we are partnering with IDRC for the screening of an IDRC-produced film entitled “Little Ghandi. We are planning some “Syria Panel + Screening” events across Canada, with the producer of the film and a Syrian activist and a Global Affairs official.
This 90-minute IDRC-funded movie on Syrian activist Little Ghandi is a documentary about the early days of the Syrian revolution, when resistance was still unarmed. The film follows the life of a Syrian peace activist, Ghiyath Matar, who was a key organizer of peaceful protests in his hometown of Daraya. Matar was later tortured and died in a Syrian prison at the age of 26. The 2015 film was funded by IDRC’s Governance and Justice team as part of an IDRC project on transitional justice with the Syrian Centre for Political and Strategic Studies (SCPSS). The film won “Best Feature Documentary” in Arab Filmmaking award at the 11th edition of the European Independent Film Festival (ECU) and has premiered in Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Gaziantep, and Washington. Many of these events mentioned above were covered by Al-Jazeera and Al-Arabiyya and several Arab and Turkish newspapers. See coverage (including video clips) on the movie’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/LittleGandhiMovie/.
