Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. Please consult our events calendar for a listing of CIC-organized and sponsored events.

If you have an idea for a CIC event, please contact us at info@thecic.org.

CIC Vancouver Island: PIP Event – Pandemics in a World on Fire: The Great Influenza of 1918 and Covid-19

January 7 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm EST

Dr. Mark Williams, our CIC-VI branch president, will kickoff the New Year with a very newsworthy and important topic for Canadians and peoples around the world.

Covid occurred with the rules-based international order eroding. The Great Influenza was born into a world on fire. Less than a month into the closures caused by Covid in early 2020, Richard Haass, President Emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations presciently said, “Covid-19 will not so much change the basic direction of world history as accelerate it.” Covid and the Great Influenza physically suffocated people, just as it figuratively stole oxygen from international cooperation. These two pandemics show how crises accelerates the course of history, affects both the balance of power and the legitimacy of political authority, and in their aftermath, leaving a world that is more anarchic, volatile, discontented, and dangerous environment for Canada and the globe.

Through small group dialogue the event invites participants to reflect on how we might learn from these experiences and advocate for protecting democracy and the rules-based international order.
