CIC Vancouver: Canada Rediscovers Southeast Asia–Again
March 21, 2016 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm EDT

The CIC Vancouver Branch cordially invites you to a special, in-depth discussion with CIC Executive Member and former Canadian Ambassador, Gordon Longmuir, entitled, “Canada Rediscovers South East Asia–Again”, on Monday, March 21st, 2016 at 5pm.
Canada seems periodically to rediscover South East Asia in its diplomacy and the new government may want to build on some recent moves by its predecessor, e.g., the Embassy in Myanmar, the resident Ambassador to ASEAN, new offices in Cambodia and Laos and several ministerial visits to the region. What is behind the current effort at engagement and can it be sustained over the longer term? Answers to these questions and other insights will be offered by Gordon Longmuir, a member of the Vancouver branch executive and a former Foreign Service Officer with extensive experience in SE Asia.
Speaker’s Biography
Gordon Longmuir served in the Royal Canadian Navy before completing studies at UBC. He joined the then-Department of External Affairs (later Foreign Affairs and International Trade) and served in Vietnam, Japan (twice); South Korea and Thailand. From 1991-95, Mr. Longmuir was Deputy High Commissioner in New Delhi, India, and, from 1995-99, Ambassador of Canada to Cambodia. In Ottawa, he worked in the divisions responsible for Defence Relations and Asian Affairs and was later Director for the Central America and Caribbean Relations Division.
In his “retirement”, Mr. Longmuir is an Honorary Research Associate at the Institute of Asian Research at UBC and Associate of the Centre for Asia Pacific Initiatives at the University of Victoria. He was an adviser to the School of Peace and Conflict Management at Royal Roads University from 2005-2010. He currently is a Member-at-large of the Executive Committee of the Vancouver Branch of the Canadian International Council. From 2005 to 2015, he was Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Cambodia in British Columbia and Alberta.
