CIC Toronto: Venezuela: The Failure of Political Change and the Future of Human Rights

Join us for an insightful conversation on the failure of political change in Venezuela and the future of human rights in the country. Ligia Bolívar, a prominent human rights activist and researcher, will share her thoughts and experience with Ben Rowswell, Canada’s Ambassador to Venezuela (2014-2017) and CIC President (2018-2022).

Ligia Bolivar is a Venezuelan legal expert and advocate for human rights based in Bogotá, Colombia. She is the founder of the Venezuelan Program for Education – Action on Human Rights (Provea) and co-founder of the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL, Washington DC) and the International Council on Human Rights Policy (London – Geneva). She now serves as General Coordinator of AlertaVenezuela.

Ben Rowswell served as President of the Canadian International Council from 2018 to 2022. Ben served as Canada’s Ambassador to Venezuela from 2014 to 2017. This capped a 25 year career as a professional diplomat including assignments in Canada’s embassies to Egypt, to the United States, and in Canada’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
