Author, international affairs commentator, and retired Canadian Ambassador Gar Pardy addresses the CIC Toronto on his perspectives on “The Global Ascendancy of China”, current challenges in the bilateral relationship, and prospective paths forward for Canada’s bilateral and multilateral relationships.
Gar Pardy retired from the Canadian foreign service almost twenty years ago having travelled the world since 1957 when he left Gander for a life in Labrador, Frobisher Bay, Ottawa, India, Kenya, the United States, and Central America. His travels intersected with the lives of Indira Gandhi, Mohammed Zahir Shah, Jomo Kenyatta, Idi Amin, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Regan, George Bush, Bobby Inman, Robert Gates, John McLaughlin, Mary Ryan, Manuel Noriega, Oscar Arias, Violeta Chamorro, brothers Daniel and Humberto Ortega, Stanley Faulder, Nguyen Tai Heap, James Lockyer, Monia Mazigh, Maher Arar, Omar Khadr, Dennis Edney, Lorne Waldman, Marlys Edwardh and Sandra Babcock. At various times his responsibilities and travels involved China and many of the countries on which he has written.
His most recent book China in a Changing World, was published by Agore in October 2020.
