CIC Toronto: “Tell Them We’re Human” – What the Rohingya Crisis Tells Us About the World & Canada’s Foreign Policy Choices

Mr. Rae will discuss his views of the humanitarian situation and its implications, and the recommendations in his report to the Government of Canada on how Canada and allies should respond to help Rohingya Muslim refugees who fled their homes in the Buddhist state of Myanmar. Mr. Rae will also discuss how the refugee issue influences political developments within Myanmar and in the region
Speaker’s Biography
Born in Ottawa and a graduate of the UofT and Oxford, Bob Rae was first elected to Parliament as MP for Broadview in October,1978. He resigned in 1982 when elected Ontario NDP Leader, and later elected to the Legislative Assembly. After more than a decade as a partner at Goodmans LLP Bob returned to Parliament as MP for Toronto Centre in 2008. Bob resigned in 2013 to become senior partner at Olthuis Kleer Townshend LLP, where he works with First Nations as legal counsel, advisor, and negotiator.
Bob served as Ontario’s Premier from 1990 to 1995 and Interim Federal Leader of the Liberal Party in 2011- 2013. In October, 2017 Bob was appointed as Special Envoy to Myanmar by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Bob also teaches at the UofT as a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the School of Public Policy and Governance (SPPG), and as Distinguished Professor at Victoria College. He is a Fellow at the Forum of Federations, and consults internationally on governance issues. He writes and speaks regularly on public issues and also does ADR work with ADR Chambers.
