CIC Toronto: Canadian Sustainable Energy: A Global Context Analysis

Description

Canada has assumed a leadership position in renewable energy, such that two-thirds of Canada’s electricity supply now comes from renewable sources such as hydro and wind power. Canada ranks fourth in the world, behind only China, the United States and Brazil, in the production of all types of renewable energy.

Various developing countries such as India are also seizing on the opportunities of sustainable energy are to the common abundance of sun and wind power. On the other hand, the announcement by President Trump of the United States withdrawal from the Paris Climate accord demonstrates the negative sentiments around this topic. This program will feature an expert panel to provide a Canadian perspective in sustainable energy in a global context. The topics to be discussed will include the following:

· Key motivations behind the Canadian push to sutainable energy

· Success and shortcomings of the domestic sustainable energy market

· Inhibitions to the attainment of complete sustainable energy in Canada

· High-level overview of the success and shortcomings of other nations‘ sustainable energy ambitions

Speakers’ Biography

Frank Carnevale: Mr. Carnevale is an award-winning serial entrepreneur. Currently, he is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Bridgepoint Group Ltd., a boutique consulting, advisory and merchant banking firm focused on business development strategies and execution of sustainability, energy and infrastructure solutions. In addition, Mr. Carnevale is a Managing Partner of Impact Investment Partners Inc., a responsible investment platform fighting climate change. Through this role, he is a Principal of energyX Solutions Inc., an investee and an MIT award-winning technology company of energy management solutions. Mr. Carnevale is a Board Member of the Energy Council of Canada and previously a board member for the Ontario Energy Association and Rethink Sustainability Initiatives (RSI).

Omar Khan: Omar Khan currently serves as the Vice-President for Public Affairs at Hill+Knowlton Strategies. He has served as the most senior advisor to the Minister at the Office of the Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment and was responsible for a staff of eleven full time employees. He directed and managed the implementation of all economic development priorities for the Government of Ontario including investment attraction, trade promotion and all aspects of long-term industrial policy. Furthermore, he led the rollout of Ontario’s Youth Jobs Strategy, which links young workers with employers to help them gain valuable experience, skills and an appreciation of entrepreneurship. Omar accompanied the Minister on international trade missions to the United States and the Middle East. Additionally, he acted as the governments political point person on negotiations with OpenText inc. to leverage an investment in excess of a billion dollars into Ontario. Lastly, he was the Minister’s key liaison with Ontario’s auto sector and related labour unions as we developed Ontario’s response to the Canada-South Korea Free Trade Agreement.

Meaghan Corker: Corker is a Policy Advisor at the Ministry of Energy in Ontario. She was formerly Legislative Assistant and Issues Manager for the Ministry of Energy and of the Ministry of Community and Social Services. She was also a Government Affairs Specialist at Bell and a Policy Analyst at Toronto Region Board of Trade. Meaghan has a Masters Degree in Public Policy from the University of Toronto and a Bachelors Degree in Management and Organizational Studies and Political Science from the University of Western Ontario.
