Events

The mission of the CIC is to promote an understanding of international affairs and Canada’s role in a changing world by providing Canadians with a non-partisan, nationwide forum for informed discussion, analysis and debate. Accordingly, the cornerstone of the CIC’s work is our events program. The CIC national office and our branches hold more than 150 events per year in cities across the country. In particular, our branch events give members an opportunity to directly engage with global issues that often intersect with local concerns. The CIC also supports events outside of Canada, often in partnership with other global think tanks, that can introduce Canadian perspectives to global audiences. CIC events take on many different forms, from academic lectures and panel discussions to town hall meetings and pub nights. Please consult our events calendar for a listing of CIC-organized and sponsored events.

CIC Toronto: Canada and the Five Eyes – Rethinking Intelligence Cooperation

August 24 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Canada and the Five Eyes: Rethinking Intelligence Cooperation

Date: Monday, August 24, 2026
Time: 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM (EST)
Location: Virtual via Zoom Webinar

The Canadian International Council’s Toronto Branch is pleased to invite you to a panel discussion on Canada and the Five Eyes: Rethinking Intelligence Cooperation.

The Five Eyes intelligence alliance—comprising Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States—is one of the world’s most enduring and consequential intelligence partnerships. Yet public discussions of the Five Eyes often rely on assumptions about how the alliance works, how its members cooperate, and what it means for Canada’s role in international security.

Drawing on his recent article, “5 Myths About the Five Eyes,” as well as his co-authored book, Beyond Five Eyes Intelligence: An International Political Sociology (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2026), Professor Srdjan Vucetic will examine some of the common myths surrounding the Five Eyes and explore the alliance from a broader international political and sociological perspective.

The discussion will consider Canada’s place within the Five Eyes, the evolution and dynamics of intelligence cooperation among its members, and what changing geopolitical conditions mean for the future of the alliance. It will also explore how Canadians should understand the Five Eyes beyond its conventional portrayal as a unified intelligence bloc.

The presentation will be followed by a moderated discussion led by Mustafa Aryan, President of the Canadian International Council, Toronto Branch and audience Q&A.
