CIC Saskatoon: The Panama Papers and Tax Havens: the Fight Club of the Tax Industry
May 25, 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm EDT

As CIC-Saskatoon’s 2015-2016 programming season nears its final approach, we welcome you to a celebration of internationally-themed education and entertainment with out tenth event as we welcome Joseph A. Gill to speak to us about The Panama Papers.
On April 3, 2016, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) published a story quickly dubbed and now forever known as the Panama Papers. This story brings to light the shadowy and often misunderstood world of international finance. A year before the release of the Panama Papers a “John Doe” leaked 11.5 million documents from the Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca. These leaked documents detailed how wealthy individuals, public officials and the powerful elite are able to shield personal financial information in offshore corporations.
Though the creation and use of these offshore business entities is often not illegal, the Panama Papers uncovered a number of nefarious uses by the clients of Mossack Fonseca that included fraud, tax evasion, drug and human trafficking, kleptocracy and the evasion of international sanctions. Most recently the ICIJ released the entire database of the Panama Papers leaks to the public. In the coming months we will see what, if any, political fallout will come.
There are many questions that need to be answered and much debate to still be had by the public about the legality and legitimacy of these intenational tax havens. The CIC would like to invite you to be part of that debate.
