TIME: Presentation 8:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
TOPIC: The war in Ukraine…what next and what will it mean for Canada?
SPEAKER: Chris Kilford, Queen’s Centre for International and Defence Policy
Since February of this year, the invasion of Ukraine has witnessed horrific scenes from the front lines and an influx of Ukrainians fleeing to Eastern Europe and beyond. Indeed, the war has been a disaster for the people of Ukraine but increasingly so for Russia, diminishing the country’s global standing to a point seemingly beyond recovery. Meanwhile, Europe braces for what could be a very cold winter. As the fighting continues, the question now is how will this war continue to unfold and how might it eventually end? Closer to home, Canadians are also asking what could happen to Canada’s security, economy and geopolitical position? Join our speaker, Dr. Chris Kilford, who recently visited Canadian troops deployed with NATO in Latvia, and travelled to Ankara, Türkiye to hear the Turkish perspective on current events.
About our speaker:
Dr. Chris Kilford served as the Canadian Defence Attaché to Türkiye, with cross accreditation to Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkmenistan from 2011 to 2014, and in Afghanistan as the Deputy Military Attaché in the Canadian Embassy in Kabul from July 2009 to July 2010. He holds a PhD in history from Queen’s University and today is a Fellow with the Queen’s Centre for International and Defence Policy. He also is a member of the national board of the Canadian International Council (CIC), and President of CIC Victoria.
