CIC Saskatoon: Dinner followed by Public Presentation: The 2019 Hong Kong Protests

Hong Kong, one of the most important international financial centres, business hubs and travel destinations in the world, has been facing political turmoil since June. On a single day in June, an estimated two million Hong Kong people took to the streets to express their concerns and demands, setting a record for one of the largest protests in human history. Protests in Hong Kong have not subsided and some have even taken a violent turn.

Join Dr. Tang, as she tackles questions such as:
What are the protesters fighting for?
What has been the response of various stakeholders including: the Hong Kong government, the Chinese central government, the citizens of Hong Kong, the citizens of mainland China and international community?
What are the regional and international implications of the Hong Kong protests midst increasing tensions between China and the West?

Speaker’s Biography
Dr. Leila Tang grew up in mainland China and lived in Hong Kong between 2001 and 2004. Dr. Tang earned her Master’s Degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and consequently a Ph.D. in Communication Studies from Fudan University in Shanghai. Dr. Tang has over ten years of teaching and research experience at universities in Hong Kong and Shanghai as well as substantial communications experience in the Beijing, Hong Kong and Tokyo private sectors.

Before immigrating to Canada in 2016, Dr. Tang worked as an assistant professor at the School of Journalism, Fudan University. She has extensive knowledge and consulting expertise in the areas of media ecology and social media development in China.

Dr. Tang is the author of the book New Dialogue – Organizational External Communication in the Digital Era and her broader areas of interest include international relations and political science.

Currently, Dr. Tang lives in Saskatoon and holds the position of International Research Specialist at the University of Saskatchewan.
