CIC Saskatoon: Book Event: “LOOK WHO’S WATCHING// Surveillance, Treachery and Trust Online”
May 15 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm EDT
Do you trust the internet? Many of us fail to realize that it is the concept of trust which provides the glue that keeps the internet together. Many things have come along to challenge this trust: the Ashley Madison hacks, Wikileaks, the Snowden revelations of government monitoring, the threats to net neutrality.
What are the effects of loss of internet trust on our behaviours; our interactions with the internet; and the foundations of the internet itself?
For his book, “Look Who’s Watching // Surveillance, Treachery and Trust Online”, Dr. Hampson has done extensive research on the fundamentals of trust on the internet, and the different forces that have served to erode this trust. His book serves to point out the dangers and their threats – but he offers hope in ways that trust can be rebuilt, permitting a continued flourishing of the social and commercial capital of the Internet. CIC-Saskatoon is honoured to present to you Dr. Hampson, who will do his best answer your questions and calm your fears.
FEN OSLER HAMPSON is distinguished fellow at CIGI (Centre for International Governance Innovation, a foreign policy research centre based in Waterloo, Ontario), and is the director of CIGI’s Global Security & Politics Program. Most recently, he served as director of the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs and continues to serve as Chancellor’s Professor at Carleton University in Ottawa.
CIC-Saskatoon wishes to thank its partners in this event: McNally Robinson Booksellers; CIC-Winnipeg; CIGI; and Dr. Hampson.
