CIC Prince George: War in Ukraine and the Global Response – A Conversation With Roman Waschuk
April 7 @ 7:30 am - 8:30 am PDT
On February 24, 2022 the Russian armed forces invaded Ukraine, unleashing an assault on the Ukrainian people not seen in Europe since the Second World War. With the lines of communications still intact, the rest of the world has been able to watch, in real time, as the horrors of modern warfare rain down on the Ukrainian people, their homes and their institutions.
Making sense of it all and figuring out what we in Canada should be doing requires insight from those who have experience on the ground and in the corridors of power. For that reason we are honoured to host Roman Waschuk on April 7th so he can share his thoughts on the war in Ukraine, and help us make sense of the implications this has for Canada and the rest of the world.
Roman Waschuk served as Canada’s Ambassador to Ukraine from 2014 to 2019, capping over three decades with Canada’s diplomatic service. The son of Ukrainian immigrants that came to Canada after the Second World War, he was born in Toronto and later graduated from the University of Toronto, earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Central and Eastern European History. In 1987, he joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and worked in the Eastern Europe, European Union, and Policy Planning Divisions. Abroad, he served in the political and economic sections of Canada’s embassies in Moscow (1988-91), Kyiv (1994-98), and Berlin (2002-2007). In 2011, he was appointed Ambassador of Canada to Serbia with concurrent accreditation to Northern Macedonia and Montenegro and then served as Canada’s Ambassador to Kyiv from October 2014 until October 2019. Today, he is the Business Ombudsman for the Business Ombudsman Council in Ukraine, an organization dedicated to combating corruption.
