With Beijing’s increasing aggression against Taiwan, neighbouring countries and likeminded partners such as Japan, South Korea, United States, Canada, Australia and the European Union are concerned about maintaining peace and security in the region. As Taiwan is Canada’s 13th largest trading partner in the world and 5th largest trading partner in Asia, the stability of the Taiwan Strait is important for Taiwanese and Canadians alike.

Serving as Taiwan’s top diplomat in Western Canada, Director General Lihsin (Angel) Liu of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Vancouver (TECO Vancouver) will be joining CIC Prince George for a presentation and lunch on May 25, 2023 to share her views on ways to strengthen Taiwan-Canada relations. Director General Liu will explain how both sides can work together to solidify economic, cultural and indigenous relationships, and highlight more opportunities for greater collaboration following the release of several important, policy-defining documents by the executive and legislative branches of Canada: Global Affairs Canada’s “Indo-Pacific Strategy” and the Canadian House of Commons’ “Canada and Taiwan: A Strong Relationship in Turbulent Times”.

Before taking up her post as TECO Vancouver’s Director General, Liu served in many different roles with Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During her 23 years of service with the Ministry, Liu was posted in the American cities of Houston and Los Angeles, and was tasked with important projects at the Institute of Diplomacy and International Affairs, Deputy Foreign Minister’s Office, Mainland Affairs Council, and departments responsible for North American, East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Liu has a master’s degree in China Studies and International Economics from John Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.
