CIC Nipissing: Democracy in Peril: Does Canada Have a Role?

May 26, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Join the Canadian International Council (CIC) Nipissing District Branch for a discussion with Dr. Tom Axworthy (former Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau) on democracy promotion in Canadian foreign policy. Democracy in many countries across the world, as Dr. Axworthy argues, is more in peril these days than during the 1930s. However, what role should established liberal democracies play in democracy promotion across the world, especially when in many global regions (Latin America, for example) democracy promotion may carry negative connotations of external influence in domestic political affairs. In particular, Dr. Axworthy will review the possible ramifications of a new instrument of Canadian foreign policy: a Democracy Canada Institute.
