CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Whither the Islamic State?

Join us at the first event of the new season of the CIC National Capital’s Middle East Study Group (MESG) featuring Mr. Phil Gurski, a distinguished analyst and author who is well known for his extensive work on security and intelligence matters regarding violent extremism and radicalization in Canada and abroad. Taking into account the vast experience of our distinguished speaker, this event will provide the participants with a unique opportunity for interactions during Q&A. 

Description: In the aftermath of the alleged ‘defeat’ of Islamic State, what remains of the terrorist group? How many ‘fighters’ are left? How many ‘affiliates’ are active. Former CSIS analyst and author of the book, The Lesser Jihads, Phil Gurski will discuss the issue of whither IS.  In the wake of a series of white supremacist attacks in the US, how important is IS still and what level of resources should be dedicated to stopping it.

Biography: Phil Gurski is the President and CEO of Borealis Threat and Risk Consulting Ltd. (www.borealisthreatandrisk.com.  He worked in the Canadian security intelligence community for 32 years with posts at CSIS (Canadian Security Intelligence Service) and  CSE  (Communications Security Establishment).  Mr. Gurski has presented on violent Islamist-inspired homegrown extremism and radicalisation across Canada and around the world and is the author of “The Threat from Within: Recognizing Al Qaeda-inspired Radicalization and Terrorism in the West” (Rowman and Littlefield 2015) “Western Foreign Fighters: the threat to homeland and international security” (Rowman and Littlefield 2017), The Lesser Jihads: taking the Islamist fight to the world (Rowman and Littlefield 2017), An end to the ‘war on terrorism ’ and the forthcoming When religion kills: how extremist justify violence through faith (Lynne Rienner).  He regularly blogs and podcasts (Terrorism in Canada and the West – available on his Web site), and tweets (@borealissaves) on terrorism.
