The CIC National Capital Branch’s North America Study Group is pleased to host this this virtual event, exclusive to CIC members
RICHARD MILLS JR., CHARGÉ D’AFFAIRES, EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO CANADA, DEFENSE IN THE AFTERMATH OF COVID-19
Join us for this event that will explore the role of military spending in the post-Covid-19 economic recovery.
The United States Embassy has provided us with the following synopsis of Mr. Mills’ remarks: “COVID-19 has had a profoundly negative impact on national economies. Governments must consider which levers of national power they can pull to aid in economic recovery once the immediate threat of the pandemic has passed. At the same time, nations must remain vigilant to ongoing global security challenges. Defense spending, particularly in the areas of modernization and procurements simultaneously can serve to improve a nation’s military readiness and support post-pandemic economic recovery.”
Mr. Mills accepted his position as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy Ottawa in November 2018. He is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Minister Counselor. Mr. Mills previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Armenia from 2015-2018. His other posts include: Beirut, Lebanon; Valetta, Malta; Baghdad, Iraq; London, United Kingdom; and the United Nations in New York, among other assignments. In January 2020, President Trump announced his intent to nominate Mr. Mills as Deputy Representative of the United States of America to the United Nations, with the Rank and Status of Ambassador.
