CIC National Capital (Ottawa): Politics at the Pub: Digital Diplomacy in the Current Era of Foreign Affairs
November 27, 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm EST

Description
The rapid growth of digital media and information technologies has broadened the realm of political discourse and public diplomacy. The concept of digital diplomacy, including what some refer to as “Twitter diplomacy”, has been around for some time now, with varying approaches taken by different countries and governments. What has digital diplomacy achieved so far? How has it evolved from initial expectations? How effective is it as a means of influencing foreign affairs? Where do future opportunities lie?
Spend the evening with us as our panel addresses the value of this emerging field and discusses how different state and non-state actors are getting involved in this new generation of diplomacy and foreign affairs.
Panelists
Martha McLean: Martha is the Deputy Director for Advocacy Campaigns and Digital Engagement at Global Affairs Canada, where she manages and guides the digital communication and engagement work for Canada’s network of Embassies, High Commissions, and Consulates. Howard Fremeth: Howard is a senior consultant with the Ottawa office of NATIONAL Public Relations and a lecturer on digital diplomacy and professional communications at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communications.
